The members of the Myriad Trio — Che-Yen “Brian” Chen, Demarre McGill and Julie Smith Phillips — met when they were members of the San Diego Symphony more than 10 years ago. Phillips has continued with the San Diego Symphony as principal harpist, Chen became a professor of viola at the UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, and McGill is principal flutist of the Seattle Symphony.

Taiwanese violist Che-Yen Chen was a first prize winner of the 2006 London International String Quartet Competition and was also first prize winner of the 2003 William Primrose Viola Competition. As a former member of Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society and a participant of the Marlboro Festival, Chen’s combined passion in chamber music and education has led him to embark on cofounding the Formosa Chamber Music Festival, the first intensive chamber music training program of its kind in Taiwan.

Winner of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, Demarre McGill currently serves as the principal flute of the Seattle Symphony. As an educator, Demarre is associate professor of flute at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and has taught and presented master classes in South Africa, Korea, Japan, Quebec, and throughout the United States.

Gaining international recognition for her performing style and diverse repertoire, Julie Smith Phillips was the silver medalist winner in the 2004 USA International Harp Competition and bronze medalist in 2001. She made her National Symphony Orchestra debut in 2003 and has been honored in numerous competitions throughout the country.
