ArtsReach Community Partners 2019-20

By developing partnerships with local organizations, we engage new audiences from the community, as well as providing unique experiences for our regular patrons.

Irvine Unified School District and The City of Irvine
The City of Irvine and the Irvine Unified School District have a well deserved reputation for supporting the arts through education. The City of Irvine was a founding funder of the Barclay and continues to support ‘Irvine’s local theater’. We have welcomed and worked with Irvine students and residents since we opened in 1990 and continue to do so through the ArtsReach Program.

This year, advanced Jazz Students from Irvine High School attended a Chick Corea Sound Check; Woodbridge High School’s a capella choir ‘Relentless’ performed for invited guests from the Regional Center of Orange County at our Holiday Open House.
Students from Cadence Park K-8 School, Beacon Park K-8 School and University Park Elementary will participate in our JazzReach program of in-school assemblies with the New York based Metta Quintet.

Newport Mesa Unified School District
This year the Barclay hosted drama teachers from Newport Harbor High School and Corona Del Mar High School who attended a professional development day at the Barclay and UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts.

Orange County School of the Arts
Grammy award winning vocalist, Diane Schuur, will gave a Master Class to advanced musical theater students from OSCA before performing at the Barclay the following night.

Santa Ana Unified School District and Turnaround Arts California
As part of our partnership with Turnaround Arts we worked with two schools in Santa Ana. Students from Willard Intermediate School received an in-school workshop with dance company BODYTRAFFIC and students from the Sierra Preparatory Academy Jazz Band developed their skills with the New York based Metta Quintet as part of our JazzReach program of in-school workshops.

Regional Center of Orange County
Guests from the adult day service programs, coordinated by the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC), attended a Holiday Open House at the Barclay. In preparation for this and other events, the RCOC delivered a ‘Developmental Disability Awareness’ training for our Front of House staff.

University of California, Irvine (UCI)
Since 1990, when UCI donated the land on which our theatre stands, there has been a strong partnership between the Barclay and the University. As well as hosting many Claire Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA) Performances and Events at the Barclay throughout the academic year, we also involve students and faculty in our ArtsReach program. Each year our visiting dance companies provide Master Classes for CTSA Dance Department students as part of their Contemporary Dance Initiative. This year students from the CTSA Drama Department worked with Broadway star (and CTSA alum) Scott Coulter, when he visited for a performance in ‘The Music of the Knights’, and UCI Faculty have given pre-show lectures and talks, which are  promoted through UCI Illuminations.

University and College Jazz Departments
Students from Chapman University, Fullerton College, Long Beach City College and Saddleback College Jazz Departments attended a Chick Corea Sound Check.

Working Wardrobes
In a new collaboration, the Barclay worked with Working Wardrobes to co-present a performance of ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ in February, 2020. A donation from every ticket was made to Working Wardrobes to support their work with veterans.
