Elena Cattaneo, Order of Merit for the Republic of Italy (OMRI) and Senator for Life, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Biosciences at the University of Milan and co-founder and director of UniStem, the university’s center for stem cell research. Cattaneo is widely recognized for her studies on neural stem cells and Huntington’s disease. She received the 2001 Le Scienze Prize for Medicine and a Gold Medal from the President of the Italian Republic, for her research. Cattaneo organized a delegation of Huntington’s disease patients and their families to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican in May 2017. The event was attended by 1,700 people from 26 countries. A champion of science, Cattaneo has organized many national and international scientific events. In 2014, she was honored as a co-recipient of the International Society for Stem Cell Research Public Service Award for her involvement in public debate and policy-making in Italy, and for championing rigorous scientific and medical standards and stringent regulatory oversight in the introduction of new stem cell treatments into the clinic.
